The Department is extending late disbursement flexibilities to students who filed the FAFSA—either online or via paper—for the 2024–25 award year and were affected by known issues that prevented the calculation of their official Student Aid Index (SAI) before the end of their enrollment.
These flexibilities, previously limited to paper filers, now apply to all affected students, allowing schools to disburse Title IV funds if the application receipt date was before the student’s withdrawal or ineligibility date. Additionally, the 180-day late disbursement period may commence from the later of the student’s withdrawal date or the earliest transaction processed date with an official SAI.
Alternative Application Receipt Dates for Paper Filers
For students who submitted paper FAFSA forms, schools may use an alternative application receipt date for late disbursement eligibility if they can provide documentation supporting an earlier submission date than what’s reflected in the system. Acceptable documentation includes delivery confirmation receipts or a signed statement from the student.
Ongoing Processing Errors
Despite improvements, some FAFSA records are still affected by processing errors, such as:
- Reject codes that cannot be resolved due to known system issues.
- Institutional Student Information Records (ISIRs) with blank SAIs and no reject codes.
In cases where neither the applicant nor the school can resolve these issues, schools should document the problem in the student’s file and await further guidance from the Department.
