ED seeks emergency processing and OMB approval for 2026-27 FAFSA Revisions

    Share

The Department of Education is requesting emergency processing and Office of Management and Budget (OMB) approval for the latest revision of the 2026–27 FAFSA application.

These revisions were made to incorporate updates required by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), which was signed into law on July 4, 2025. The Department is seeking emergency OMB approval by August 3, 2025, in order to meet development and implementation timelines. A full public comment process will follow as part of the standard clearance procedure.

Why the Need for Emergency Processing?
The OBBBA introduced several changes for the 2026–27 FAFSA cycle. Since these updates could not be made until the law was enacted, the Department would not have been able to complete the regular OMB clearance process in time.

As a result, full OMB approval before the scheduled beta testing and launch of the form would not be feasible. Emergency processing is necessary to ensure that the FAFSA reflects the most up-to-date legal requirements and policy changes.

    What’s at Stake?
The FAFSA is scheduled to launch on October 1, 2025, in accordance with federal requirements. Without emergency review and approval, the updated form may not be ready in time which will delay both beta testing and the official rollout. This could have downstream impacts for students, institutions, and the broader financial aid community.

This request signals the Department’s commitment to implementing statutory changes while keeping the FAFSA rollout on track. Stakeholders should stay tuned for the upcoming public comment period and prepare for adjustments to the 2026–27 application process.
