With Lollapalooza, Summer Smash, and Rolling Loud all coming out with their dates and lineups, it is essential to know what to bring to ensure you are safe and having fun! As a past attendee of Lolla last year, here are my top three essentials for having the best summer festival experience.
1. Water
Water, H20, whatever you want to call it, we all know it’s important. It’s especially essential when you’re screaming your heart out with a thousand other people. Temperatures have only been rising, and with record attendance, water is the most critical resource. Water bottles are annoying to lug around, but water bags fix the carrying issue and can also hold more water than the 64oz Stanley, which is guaranteed to get stolen. If you really want to bring a water bottle, attach it to a carabiner to secure it to your bag or pants. Also, always know where the nearest water station is! Check the festival’s maps if you’re running out of water and can’t find a station quickly.
2. Chargers
Recording concerts is energy-intensive, especially for 3+ hours, so bring a charger! Not only can you record for longer, but you can also have that peace of mind that you can still call and text when needed! Public transportation can be hit or miss sometimes, so having access to Uber is great! If you don’t want to lug around a charging cable (especially with the lack of outlets at a festival), a power bank is small and efficient! Make sure it’s charged the night before, though.
3. Cash
Phones die, cards get lost and/or stolen, and some people don’t even take cards, but cash is the best backup. If you want to get food and the venue is cardless, having a couple bucks in cash could be a real life-saver. However, always check the festival’s cash/card policy beforehand.
Bonus: Here are some extra tips!
- Always have a buddy with you! The crowds are enormous, so having someone by your side is crucial.
- Plan out your schedule beforehand. If you’re commuting by train or car to the festival, know when each of your favorite artists are playing so you can get there on time. And especially if you’re traveling by train, check the train schedule!
- Check the festival’s policies before you go! There are so many rules regarding food/drinks, bags, payment, and more, so save yourself the hassle of getting into trouble and make sure you know the rules.
Most importantly, have fun and stay safe! These festivals can be unsafe at times, but if you know how to get around and stay energized, you’ll have the experience of a lifetime.
