Freda (Grand) Calloway emcees at an ASPSF Scholarship Ceremony

Congratulations to Freda (Grandy) Calloway of Drew County! Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund has named her as the June 2023 Volunteer of the Month.

Freda assists the ASPSF Southeast Region by reviewing scholarship applications, making sure every single parent meets eligibility criteria and has turned in all required information needed to receive a scholarship.

Her favorite volunteer activity is coordinating scholarship ceremonies to honor single parents and their achievements each semester.

“I love the opportunity to assist in celebrating the scholarship recipients,” Freda said. “I love seeing the sense of happiness and pride on their faces as well as on the faces of their children and loved ones.”

At the Spring 2023 Scholarship Ceremony in Monticello, Freda not only helped set up and take down the event, but she also emceed! The fun event — which included a job-skills workshop — wouldn’t have been a success without Freda and other ASPSF volunteers.

Freda said she found out about ASPSF four years ago through a staff member when she was working at the University of Arkansas at Monticello.

Freda poses in a photo with other volunteers, holding a bag that says "VOLUNTEER".

“When I was asked if I would volunteer with ASPSF, I jumped on the opportunity,” Freda said.  “I was a single parent at the time and understood the struggle of making ends meet and providing for children.  I also saw this as an opportunity to give back to the community and help other single parents.”

Today, Freda is a teacher at the McGehee School District and gives monthly to ASPSF. We’re grateful for her generous and caring heart.

If you’d like to help provide life-changing scholarships and support to thousands of low-income single parents, fill out the volunteer form at aspsf.org/volunteer.
