Meet Jenna McMurphy 2024-2025 Leadership Pipeline Mentee.

My name is Jenna McMurphy and I am the Assistant Director for Access and Outreach in the Office of Financial Aid at Colorado State University. With over eight years working in financial aid, I am passionate about outreach, public speaking, and helping students and families navigate the financial aid process.
Who is your mentor?
My mentor is Karrie Huber, throughout the program Karrie has been an incredible mentor drawing from her own perspective and experiences as a leader in financial aid. Stepping into my new role as an Assistant Director, Karrie has been pivotal in imparting guidance and insight that has helped shape me into a better leader. I am beyond grateful for this mentorship, from the moment I met Karrie she believed in me not only as a professional but also as a mother.
Why did you decide to join Leadership Pipeline?
When I attended my first RMASFAA conference back in 2022 I knew right away that RMASFAA was a community that I wanted to be a part of. I immediately knew I was surrounded by like-minded people that were passionate about supporting each other and committed to student success. From then on, I wanted to find more ways to become involved with the association and at the same time I was hoping to step into more leadership opportunities. With both of those goals in mind, applying for the Leadership Pipeline was my first step. Applying to the Leadership Pipeline was the best decision I could have made as I have gained valuable knowledge in leadership.
What is the most valuable thing you have learned so far?
The most valuable thing I have learned so far and will take with me moving forward is that regardless of your position, title, or number of years in a profession, you can be a leader from wherever you are at. This idea is so empowering and is something I wish I could have told myself as a young professional.
What are you hoping to gain from the experience?
I have already gained so much from this experience from making meaningful connections and gaining wisdom from other leaders within the field. Paired with the texts we have read, monthly meetings as a group and with our mentors, I have gained an understanding of the foundation of being an impactful leader. As we finish the program, I hope to continue to gain the qualities and skills of effective leaders and bring that forth within my new role and as a member of RMASFAA.
Why would you recommend this program to others?
I recommend this program because it has taught me to believe in myself and see that I am already a leader in my own way from exactly where I am within my professional journey. This program brings community, encouragement, knowledge, and I encourage anyone eager to become more involved with the association, wanting to make connections and build their leadership skills to apply.
