Many college students are nervous about moving away from their parents and trying to fit into a new environment. During the college transition time, there are hoards of students who move across the country.
Before transferring from the University of Houston in Texas to Boston University in Massachusetts, I had only ever lived in the southern U.S. Following my move, I have noticed many differences between the South and the North, and I have developed skills that made the transition between the two regions easier.
- Transportation
Public transportation is much more readily available in the North than in the South, but be ready to be trapped in what feels like a small box with millions of people. I wish I was joking.
Walking is also a popular option here in the North. There are walkable sidewalks, so you don’t have to walk on the main road. As someone who has never had their own car, this is much better than the South. Every person needs a car in the South, or they will pay the price.
- Weather
The most noticeable difference between the North and South is the weather.
The South is suitable for many outdoor activities throughout the year (except this summer, when the weather wanted us to burn alive).
On the other hand, the North is all about freezing you to death. Be sure to buy a cute winter jacket before moving to the North!
- Prices
Everything is expensive in the North, or at least in Boston. Who knew a donut could cost $10?
Before traveling here, be sure to buy everything you need, as you will be paying double the price for everything after you arrive.
