Spring Update from MASFAA – The Exchange Blog

    Share

From April 1-3, 2025, the MASFAA Annual Spring Conference convened in Fairmont Hot Springs in Montana with the theme “Better Together.” This year’s gathering brought together financial aid professionals from across the state and beyond to connect, learn, and celebrate the power of collaboration. With a diverse agenda packed with engaging sessions, inspiring guest speakers, and a spirit of camaraderie, the conference truly embodied its theme.

An Atmosphere of Puzzle Pieces and Connection

From the moment participants arrived, the theme “Better Together” was visually woven into every aspect of the conference. The room was beautifully decorated with puzzle-themed decor—puzzle piece banners, table centerpieces, and even the registration desk displayed colorful puzzle motifs. Themed door prizes, gifts, and activities kept the energy lively, all centered around the idea of fitting pieces together.

Ice breaker activities cleverly incorporated puzzles to encourage mingling and collaboration among attendees. Participants worked together to solve puzzles in small groups, fostering connections and breaking down barriers early in the event. The playful use of puzzles served as a metaphor for the conference theme—each person a unique piece, and together, creating a complete picture.

In a heartfelt gesture, each participant received a puzzle piece inscribed with:

“Thank you for completing our puzzle! Better Together! MASFAA 2025”  This symbolic gift reminded everyone that individual efforts come together to create a complete picture of success, collaboration, and community.”

    Inspiring Keynote and Dynamic Sessions

The keynote address and agenda items were thoughtfully curated to address pressing topics and future trends in financial aid while strengthening our collaboration with others.

    Highlights included:

    – Developing a Leadership Culture with Your Team: Strategies for cultivating leadership qualities and empowering your team to succeed from “That’s not my job” to “I have something to offer here!”

    – Topic in Your Pocket: Attendees submitted topics for group discussion.

    – Conflict Resolution: The session wasn’t how to “win” in conflict, but we learned techniques for navigating disagreements and fostering a collaborative environment as we advocate for and serve students.

    – PSLF (Public Service Loan Forgiveness): Updates and best practices to assist students.

    – AI Essentials: Exploring the role of artificial intelligence in streamlining financial aid processes.

    – Future-Proofing the Financial Aid Office: Positioning the Financial Aid Office for long-term success in a rapidly evolving educational and financial landscape to ensure its success.

    – Simple Strategies to Reassure Families of Your Institution’s Value: Building trust and communicating value beyond the price.

    – Freeze! Helping Your Students Protect Their Credit: Practical advice for safeguarding students’ financial futures.

    Special Guests

We were delighted to welcome two special guests who brought enthusiasm and expertise to our gathering:

    – Rocky Christensen, Director at Johnson University in Knox County, Tennessee, and

    – Jill Robinson from Western Governors University, representing RMASFAA.

Both Rocky and Jill jumped right in, engaging with attendees and infusing the sessions with energy and insight. Their contributions sparked lively discussions and provided fresh perspectives on common challenges from state to state.

A Touch of Humor and Inspiration

Throughout the conference, our President Elect, Carol Will, kept the mood light with a series of financial aid jokes that had everyone smiling. One such favorite was:  What do you call a student who’s always late for financial aid appointments? A ‘loan-der!’”

In addition, a memorable quote was shared that resonated with the theme: “Coming together is the beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.” — Henry Ford

    Closing Thoughts

The 2025 MASFAA Spring Conference was an example of what can be achieved when we come together with a shared purpose. The theme “Better Together” was more than just words — it was the guiding principle that connected us all. As we return to our respective institutions, let’s carry forward the spirit of collaboration, innovation, and support that made this event so memorable.

Thank you to everyone who participated, guest speakers, and organizers for making MASFAA 2025 a truly inspiring experience. We look forward to building on these connections and working together toward even greater success in the years ahead.
