Meet Stephen Detlefs 2024-2025 Leadership Pipeline Mentee.
While I started in Financial Aid in 2022, I have been employed in Higher Education since 2011. The majority of that time was spent wearing multiple hats as Adjunct Faculty teaching Basic Speech and other roles while I lived in Nebraska. After moving to South Dakota in 2019 our Family grew in 2020 when our son Fox was born. Now our time is spent exploring the trails of the beautiful Black Hills and spending time playing at any park we find.
Who is your mentor?
My mentor is James Broscheit, Director of Financial Aid at Montana State University, has been in Higher Education since 1986. James’ Interests beyond Financial Aid include Family and Friends, Staying active, Creating memories. James added “there are no refunds on today, plan ahead but find something in each day as you go.”
Why did you decide to join Leadership Pipeline?
What led me to join the program was a want to challenge myself to grow in both personal and professional development.
What is the most valuable thing you have learned so far?
One phrase that has stuck with me is “Moving at the Speed of Trust”, everyone trusts at their own speed so to expect everyone to move at the same speed is unrealistic.
What are you hoping to gain from the experience?
This experience is helping me to better trust myself and the things I am doing. My confidence in myself is growing through this program.

There are several reasons I would recommend this program, one of the top reasons would be the community you build with those in the program.
