Now that the leaves are slowly starting to brown and pumpkin spice lattes are back in Starbucks stores (which is a major slay, if you ask me), it’s time to start thinking about pulling out your fall jackets and worn-down Dr. Martens from the back of your closet. But another fall accessory that can’t be forgotten is your mani — that’s right, it’s officially time to bid goodbye to bright summery hues that dominated the warmer months and say hello to fall’s latest nail trends. (And yes, Hailey Bieber’s iconic glazed donut mani that went viral in summer 2022 will be following us into the colder months — sorry, I don’t make the rules.)
Planning your next trip to the nail salon, or just getting excited about all things fall (because same)? Read on for six fall 2022 nail trends to show your nail tech, or to try DIYing at home.
- Glazed donut nails
Coined by Hailey Bieber, the glazed donut mani dominated nail salons far and wide this summer. The past few times I’ve been to the nail salon, there’s always — without fail — someone next to me getting sparkly chrome dust sprinkled onto their nails. And with Bieber’s new brownie glazed lips, Bieber and her “glazed” beauty looks will definitely be transitioning into the cooler months, too.
To get the look, Bieber’s nail artist Zola Gazorigt uses OPI Gel Polish in Funny Bunny, and then dusts OPI Chrome Effects Powder in Tin Man Can over it. Tired of the basic glazed mani? Try going for a strawberry glazed mani, or create a whole new rendition of the look. Blueberry glazed mani, anyone?
- Pastel french tips
Although pastel French tips really had their moment last year, they’ll continue to dominate nails into the fall. Dua Lipa recently rocked a pastel French mani in Ibiza, bringing the look back into popularity.
Feel like pastel shades are too spring-y, or just want something a bit more moody for sad girl fall? Try going for a more muted shade — regardless, French tips are still super in this season. (A mocha brown French tip is a great option, just saying!)
- Aura mani
Aura nails became all the buzz over the summer and will likely spill over into the fall months like Bieber’s cult-favorite glazed donut mani. The cool thing about aura nails is that you can customize them with different colors and designs to fit your style, like this unique chrome aura look (oh, and speaking of it, chrome is also going to be everywhere this fall).
Singer Doja Cat recently debuted a funky faded neon yellow and black aura mani on her Instagram. To get the aura nails look, most nail techs use a sponge with gel polish. While the style may look hard to replicate, nail artist Daron Wood told Bustle, “The design requires no stencils and can be done with any colors, so it’s easy for beginners.”
- Ruby red nails
A bold classic that truly never goes out of style, ruby red nails have been making a major comeback and will continue being all the rage this fall. Influencers like Tinx and Emma Chamberlain have been rocking red nails as of late — and the shade looks great with both short and long nails.
Want to get the look yourself without making a special trip to the salon? Try Static Nails Liquid Glass Lacquer in Triple Cherry, or Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Nail Color in ASAP Apple.
- Barbiecore nails
Think pink! With the Barbiecore dominating clothes and fashion this fall with the buzz surrounding Greta Gerwig’s highly-anticipated Barbie movie, the trend will surely make its way to manis, too. You can get the look by doing a bubblegum French tip or painting your entire nail a hot pink.
- Outline nail art
If you’re constantly on Pinterest getting nail inspo like I am, this unique nail look has likely been all over your feed. While the nail trend originally went viral back in 2020 with celebs like Alexa Demie and Dove Cameron, outline nails will continue to be a fan-favorite in fall 2022 for their simplicity and versatility.
To snag the outline nail art look, try choosing vibrant colors like influencer Margot Lee did, or opt for a neutral color to be more in season.
