Creator Laurie Nunn commented on the ending of the show in a letter to the Sex Education fans, explaining that writing the final season felt “bittersweet” and “it was not an easy decision to make” for the writers. “As the themes and stories of the new season crystallized, it became clear that this was the right time to graduate,” Nunn stated on the Sex Education Instagram account.

What is going on in the Season 4 trailer of Sex Education?
The trailer shows Otis and Eric on their first day at Cavendish Sixth Form College. It’s clear that there will definitely be new characters joining the group, meaning more educational sessions from Otis. The trailer also teases that Otis is no longer an only child, as his mother has given birth. We’re also given glimpses into Maeve’s new life in the United States, Ruby and Otis connecting again, and Adam adjusting to his new university life.
Who in the Sex Education cast is not returning for Season 4?
Sad news: Sex Education fans can expect a few fan favorites to not be returning to Season 4. Simone Ashley (Olivia), Tanya Reynolds (Lily), Patricia Allison (Ola), and Rakhee Thakrar (Ms. Sands) will not be returning this season to Sex Education.
Ashley confirmed that she would not be in Season 4 of Sex Education in an interview with ITV’s This Morning, stating that she was “a Bridgerton girl now,” and is busy filming season 3 of the hit Netflix series. Reynolds told RadioTimes in an exclusive interview that she was leaving Sex Education, saying, “You have to let a few older characters go to make way for newer ones” and expressed how grateful she was to play a fan favorite character. Allison’s departure from the show was due to new project opportunities, and Thakrar also teased that she was working on a major project that prevented her from being in the fourth season.
Are there any new cast members joining Season 4?
Even though there are a few cast members leaving the series, fans can also expect there to be some new characters joining the world of Sex Education.
Dan Levy (who created Schitt’s Creek), Jodie Turner-Smith, Lisa McGrillis, Eshaan Akbar, Marie Reuther, Thaddea Graham, Thomas Molloy, Felix Mufti, Anthony Lexa, Reda Elazouar, Bella Maclean, Alexandra James, and Imani Yahshua are all joining this season. It’s not entirely clear yet what everyone’s roles will be, but I can say that this season looks like it’s going to be packed with many different storylines.
