Applying for college is a big milestone for students everywhere, but for many families, the financial aid process can quickly become the most stressful part. Forms, deadlines, paperwork, and financial decisions all seem to pile up at once, and without preparation, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. The good news? There’s a lot you can do now, during the summer, to make the process smoother later. As a college financial aid advisor, I’ve worked with hundreds of families, and I’ve seen how a little planning early on can make a huge difference. Whether your child is entering their junior or senior year, this guide offers practical steps for both students and parents to take now!
How to Prepare Now to Avoid Financial Aid Stress Later
Start the Money Conversation Early
Have an open and honest discussion with your student about what your family can realistically contribute to college expenses. Be clear about your budget, savings, and any limits. These conversations set expectations early and help guide school choices based on cost and value.
Gather Your Financial Documents
FAFSA and other financial aid forms will require information from your most recent tax return, as well as details about income, assets, and benefits. Start collecting W-2s, tax returns, and records of untaxed income now. Keep them organized. You’ll thank yourself later.
Create Your FSA ID
You and your student will each need an FSA ID to complete and sign the FAFSA online. It’s a quick setup process but best done ahead of time to avoid technical hiccups during crunch time.
Research School-Specific Requirements
Some colleges require the CSS Profile or have additional financial aid forms with earlier deadlines. Make a list of target schools and note their requirements and dates. A simple spreadsheet can save you from missing out on aid. Encourage your student to organize all the details and deadlines in a singular place.
Understand How Aid Works
Spend a little time learning how financial aid is awarded: grants vs. loans, merit aid vs. need-based, cost of attendance vs. expected family contribution. Knowledge really is power, and it helps you plan smarter. Read through my blog for tips about how financial aid works.
Start a Scholarship Search
There are scholarships out there for all kinds of students: academic, athletic, artistic, community-minded, and more. Summer is a great time to start researching and even applying for scholarships. Every dollar earned is a dollar less borrowed. Scholarships can be used every year, so no matter what year of school your student is in, have them find and apply for scholarships!
The college financial aid process doesn’t have to be overwhelming, especially if you start early and stay informed. By taking small, manageable steps now, parents and students can reduce stress and feel confident heading into application season. The more you prepare ahead of time, the more time you’ll have later to focus on what really matters: finding the right college fit and making it financially possible.
