Why it works as a gift
Most gifts are finished the day they are opened. A connected frame keeps arriving: Aura says invited family and friends can add photos and videos from the Aura app, and storage is free and unlimited with no subscription fee. That turns a single gift into a shared project, which is why it suits relatives who see the grandchildren less often than they would like.
Walden is Aura's large matted model. The screen is 15 inches diagonally at 1600 x 1200 with a 4:3 aspect ratio, the shape a phone camera shoots, and it works in portrait or landscape on a table or on the wall with the included mounting kit, per Aura. Aura's comparison guide calls Walden its largest frame and describes a paper-textured mat border, which in our view makes it read more like a framed print than a tablet. Aura says its frames adjust brightness to the room's light and shut off in the dark.
Compared with a classic crystal or silver frame at the same budget, Walden gives up permanence for variety: one picture versus hundreds. Compared with smaller digital frames, its size is the point, since it can hang where a print would. It does need a power outlet nearby and a Wi-Fi network, and someone has to keep adding photos for it to stay interesting.
