Why it works as a gift

Many fitness watches look like sports equipment. The Venu 4 is built to look less like one: Garmin describes a metal design, the Amazon listing calls it stainless steel, and this version comes on a brown leather band, which Garmin says swaps out easily for silicone at the gym. That combination suits a man who wants one watch for the office, the run and the weekend rather than two.

The features are the ones Garmin is known for, stated with Garmin's own caveats. It tracks heart rate around the clock, stress and sleep, with a sleep score and sleep coaching; the listing says the data is a close estimation. A beta feature Garmin calls Health Status shows when readings such as heart rate, HRV, respiration, skin temperature and overnight Pulse Ox are trending away from his usual range, and Garmin's own note on Pulse Ox says it is not a medical device and is not intended to diagnose or monitor any medical condition. He can also log habits such as late caffeine or alcohol in the Garmin Connect app and see reports on sleep, stress and HRV. Practical extras include a built-in LED flashlight, calls through a built-in speaker and microphone when paired with a phone, and up to 12 days of battery in smartwatch mode on the 45 mm size, per Garmin.

Compared with an Apple Watch at the same budget, the Venu 4's practical differences are that it works with both iPhone and Android phones and that Garmin lists up to 12 days between charges in smartwatch mode; someone already invested in Apple's apps may still prefer the Apple Watch. Compared with a dress watch, it is a tool that gets used every day, which is the better gift only if he actually wants the data.

Who it’s for

  • A husband or partner training for a first half marathon, as a birthday gift that covers runs and recovery
  • A father who walks every morning and wants something more refined than a plastic fitness band
  • A man who has just retired and is building a daily routine of exercise and better sleep
  • A brother or friend who wears an Android phone and has been left out of Apple Watch suggestions

Skip it if

  • He doesn't want health data on his wrist or finds sleep and stress scores a source of worry rather than motivation
  • He wants medical monitoring: Garmin describes the data as estimates and says Pulse Ox is not a medical device, so it is no substitute for a doctor
  • He is committed to an Apple Watch and the iPhone apps that go with it
  • He has a slim wrist and prefers a smaller watch; the Venu 4 also comes in 41 mm, so check before buying
  • He wants a traditional watch as an heirloom; a smartwatch is a tool that will be replaced in a few years

Giving it

  • Confirm his phone works with Garmin Connect (compatible iPhone or Android) before you buy
  • Charge it and leave the setup to him; pairing and the Connect app account are personal, so don't preload anything
  • Pair it with the Nikon Monarch M7 binoculars for a man who hikes, or the Ember Mug 2 for a slower morning routine
  • The leather band is the dressier option; mention in the card that Garmin bands swap easily for silicone at the gym
  • Check the retailer's return window in case the 45 mm size proves too large for his wrist
