Why it works as a gift
The Alchemist's Garden is Gucci's line of unisex eaux de parfum, acque profumate and oils designed to be combined. John Lewis quotes perfumer Alberto Morillas inviting wearers to play with the scents to find their favourite, as an alchemist would. That makes this set more than three samples: the recipient can wear each alone or layer them into something of their own.
The three are built to contrast. A Song for the Rose centres on Bulgarian rose with sweet musk and woody notes. The Voice of the Snake is built around oud, with saffron tones and dried patchouli leaves. Fading Autumn is a woody acqua profumata, a lighter layer that John Lewis says can be worn over the eaux de parfum to add a splash of freshness.
Against a single 50 ml bottle of one scent, the set suits someone who likes to tinker and talk about fragrance. It also arrives in a cream box printed in gold, so it needs little extra wrapping. The trade-off is that the line asks for engagement: someone who wants one bottle to spray and forget may never use the layering idea.
