Oura

Ring 4 Smart Ring, Gold, Size 7

For the sister who tracks her sleep

Best for a sister, friend or partner who already wants to understand her sleep and recovery, and knows her Oura size. The two real catches: sizing must be confirmed with Oura's own sizer, and full use needs a paid membership after the first month.

Why it works as a gift

The appeal of the Oura Ring 4 as a gift is that it looks like a ring rather than a gadget. Oura describes a titanium inner and outer surface and no screen, and the gold finish sits closer to jewelry than to a fitness band. For someone who has been curious about sleep tracking but hates wearing a watch to bed, that is the whole point. Oura says the ring tracks more than 50 health metrics, including sleep, activity, stress, heart health and women's health; those are the maker's claims, so treat the numbers as guidance, not medical advice.

Two things make it riskier than most gifts at this budget. First, size. Oura uses whole sizes only, says they differ from standard ring sizes, and asks people to wear its sizer for a full day, sleep included, before choosing. This link opens size 7; other sizes are separate options on Amazon's page, so guessing from a jewelry ring she already owns is not enough. Second, the membership. Oura's own guide says that without one, the app shows only three daily scores, Readiness, Sleep and Activity, plus battery level. The detailed insights need a membership. New members get the first month included; after that it is a paid Oura membership, billed monthly or yearly. You are giving her a recurring bill unless you plan to cover it.

Oura now also sells a Ring 5, which it describes as thinner and lighter; Ring 4 remains on sale. Sizing differs between generations, so use the Ring 4 sizing kit for this ring. If the recipient would rather have an everyday tech gift with no size or subscription, Bose's QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds in Desert Gold are a better fit at a similar budget.

Who it’s for

  • A sister or close friend who already tracks her sleep on her phone and talks about wanting better data
  • A runner or yoga regular who would like recovery insights without wearing a watch at night
  • A partner for a milestone birthday, when you can find out her Oura size and plan to cover the membership
  • A woman who wants cycle insights; Oura lists period prediction and fertile-window features with membership

Skip it if

  • You cannot confirm her Oura size discreetly; jewelry sizes are not a reliable guide, and this link opens size 7
  • She would not want another subscription; the app is limited without a paid membership after the first month
  • She already wears a smartwatch or fitness tracker she likes; two trackers rarely both get worn
  • She wears stacked rings or works with her hands in ways that knock a ring; it is a solid titanium band worn every day and night

Giving it

  • Order Oura's Ring 4 sizing kit first and ask her to wear the sizer for a full day and night; if the surprise matters more, give the kit with a note and choose the ring together once she knows her size
  • If you pay for the first year of membership, say so in the card so the monthly charge does not feel like part of the gift she has to manage
  • In the box: the ring, a size-specific charger and a USB-C cable, per Oura
  • Check the Amazon return window on the order page before buying; Oura's own US store allows returns, or exchanges for a different size, within 30 days of arrival, but that policy applies to Oura's store
