Why it works as a gift
Most French presses are glass beakers that lose heat fast and leave grit in the last cup. Fellow designed the Clara around both problems. The body is double-wall, vacuum-insulated stainless steel, which Fellow says keeps the brewing temperature steady and makes the press shatterproof. Fellow describes its mesh filter as giving a smooth, silt-free brew from first cup to last, and the interior has a PFOA-free non-stick coating so grounds rinse out easily.
It holds 24 ounces, enough for two people or a couple of refills for one. It comes with a small stick for stirring the grounds during the brew, and the matte black finish looks considered on a counter or a breakfast table. Fellow covers its non-electric products with a one-year limited warranty.
Compared with a classic glass press at a fraction of the cost, the Clara asks more of the budget, and the case for it is daily use: someone who makes a press pot every morning will notice the heat and the cleaner cup. For a pour-over enthusiast, Fellow's own Stagg pour-over set is the better fit.
