Why it works as a gift
The grinder is the part of a home coffee setup most people put off upgrading, because the old one still technically works. That is what makes the Ode Gen 2 a considered gift rather than another gadget: it improves every cup he already makes without asking him to change his routine. Fellow fits it with 64 mm stainless steel flat burrs and calls it a brew grinder, tuned for pour-over, AeroPress, drip, French press and cold brew.
It is built around grinding one dose at a time. The load bin holds about 100 g, so beans stay in their bag until he needs them, and the grinder stops by itself when the beans are done. Amazon's listing adds the details a tidy person notices: anti-static technology, a built-in knocker to clear leftover grounds, a magnetic catch cup, and a grind guide printed under the lid for a starting point by brew method.
Against a blade grinder at a fraction of the budget, this is a different class of tool. Against an espresso grinder at a similar budget, it is the right choice only if he brews filter coffee; for espresso it is the wrong machine, and Fellow says so plainly. It is also substantial, about 4.6 kg by Fellow's figures, so it suits a counter where it can stay put.
