Why it works as a gift
A host or client gift has to work for someone whose taste you only partly know, look generous on arrival and not create clutter. A large candle from a recognized house does all three, and this one is a clear step up from the small jar candles that pile up in most homes over the colder months. It is a 21-ounce candle (600g) with three wicks in a dark glass jar, sold and shipped by Amazon.com.
The scent is the reason to choose it over a generic candle. Molton Brown describes it as ambery; LookFantastic lists the notes as opening with cinnamon leaf, nutmeg and bergamot, moving through elemi, myrrh and black tea, and settling on oudh, vetiver and honey. That reads as warm and spiced rather than sweet, which in our view makes it a safer choice for a dining room, a study or an office than a fresh or floral scent. LookFantastic lists it as vegan and cruelty-free, and Molton Brown's Amazon listing says its home collections are made in England.
Against a bottle of wine at the same budget, the candle lasts longer and does not assume anything about what the recipient drinks. Against a decanter, it takes up no shelf space once it is finished, which matters for a client or a host whose home you do not know well.
