Why it works as a gift
The Era 100 is the kind of upgrade people rarely buy for themselves. Most of us put up with a phone speaker or an old Bluetooth puck in the kitchen. Sonos fits two angled tweeters for stereo separation and one midwoofer for vocals and bass into a speaker about 7.2 inches tall and 4.7 inches wide, so it sits on a counter, bookshelf, desk or nightstand without taking over. That is a real change in a room where someone spends hours every week.
It is also flexible about how music gets to it. It streams over Wi-Fi (Sonos lists Wi-Fi 6 compatibility), pairs over Bluetooth 5.3, and takes a turntable or other source through a 3.5 mm cable with Sonos's Line-In Adapter, sold separately. Trueplay, in the Sonos app, measures the room and adjusts the sound. It works with Sonos Voice Control and Amazon Alexa, and a switch on the back cuts power to the microphones for anyone who would rather not have them on.
Against a portable Bluetooth speaker at a similar budget, the Era 100 gives up the battery and waterproofing for fuller sound in one room and the start of a multi-room system. Against a smart display, it does one job well. It suits someone who cares how music sounds but doesn't want a stereo cabinet.
