The best Christmas gifts for Grandpa bring the family closer or improve something he already does every day: an Aura digital photo frame the grandkids keep filling from their phones, a Kolo photo album with the year's prints, a Pendleton wool throw for his chair, a Kindle for the reader and Felco pruning shears for the gardener. For a grandfather who truly wants nothing, give time: a really nice meal out, a visit, or a 1,000-piece Piecework puzzle to finish together over the holiday.

This guide is for grandchildren and their parents buying for a grandfather, whether he is 65 or 95. Every pick is grown-up and useful, with no gag socks or slogan T-shirts. If you are shopping for a father rather than a grandfather, see our Christmas gifts for a dad who has everything. Prices were checked on October 30, 2026.

How to choose a Christmas gift for Grandpa

  • Start with the family. For most grandparents, family is the point. A gift that brings their pictures, voices or visits into his week will be used long after a gadget is forgotten.
  • Upgrade the daily routine. His morning coffee, Grandpa's reading chair, the garden, the radio in the kitchen: a better version of what he already does every day beats a new hobby he never asked for.
  • Keep it simple to use. Anything that needs an app should be set up before you wrap it, and someone should be on hand to help on Christmas Day.
  • Think about his hands and eyes. Large buttons, a screen with adjustable light, light weight and easy-open lids matter more with every birthday.
  • Skip novelty. "Best Grandpa Ever" socks and mugs are sweet from a five-year-old, but from an adult a well-made thing says more.

Sentimental gifts that bring the grandkids closer

Aura Carver Mat Digital Photo Frame, 10-inch, Gravel

Aura

Carver Mat Digital Photo Frame, 10-inch, Gravel

Why they’ll love it. A 10-inch Wi-Fi frame with a paper-like matted border that the whole family can send pictures and short videos to from their phones, with unlimited storage and no subscription. You can preload it with photos and a message before you give it, so he opens it already full of familiar faces. After that, every new school picture or birthday party arrives on his shelf without him lifting a finger. It is the most meaningful gift here for a grandfather whose family lives in other cities.

Skip it if his home has no dependable Wi-Fi (it needs a 2.4GHz router), or he would rather hold printed photos; the album below suits him better.

Kolo Hudson 3up Photo Album, Black

Kolo

Hudson 3up Photo Album, Black

Why they’ll love it. A cloth-bound album that holds 300 4x6 prints, three to a page, on acid-free paper with room beside each photo to write a line. Fill the first pages before Christmas with a year of family photos, and let each grandchild write a caption or a memory beside their own. It becomes a book he can show visitors, and the rest of the pages can be filled every year.

Skip it if nobody in the family will print and sort photos before the holiday; an empty album is a chore, not a gift.

Time together: something to do over the holiday

Piecework Chocolat Jigsaw Puzzle, 1000 Pieces

Piecework

Chocolat Jigsaw Puzzle, 1000 Pieces

Why they’ll love it. A 1,000-piece puzzle of chocolate truffle towers, 19.25 by 26.6 inches finished, rated average to difficult, in a decorative tin. A puzzle on the dining table, like a good board game, keeps three generations in the same room for an afternoon: older grandchildren can work the edges while he finds the hard middle pieces. For a grandfather with a sweet tooth, give it with a box of chocolates and call it a theme.

Skip it if he has never enjoyed jigsaws, or his eyesight makes small pieces a frustration rather than a pleasure.

Comfortable gifts for his favorite chair

Pendleton Yakima Camp Throw

Pendleton

Yakima Camp Throw

Why they’ll love it. A 54 by 66 inch throw of pure virgin wool and cotton, woven in Pendleton's American mills and finished with a whipstitch edge. It is the comfy gift for a grandfather who naps in the same armchair every afternoon or watches the sport on TV under a blanket. Pendleton's own site lists several colorways, from stripes to heathers; the Amazon listing doesn't name its color, so check the photo before you buy.

Skip it if he is sensitive to wool, or wants something he can throw in the washing machine; it is dry clean only.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 16GB, Graphite

Amazon

Kindle Paperwhite 16GB, Graphite

Why they’ll love it. A 7-inch, glare-free e-reader with an adjustable warm light, a battery Amazon rates at up to 12 weeks per charge, and no emails or notifications to distract him. For a grandfather who reads every evening, it is lighter to hold than a hardback and readable in bed or on a sunny porch. Set it up with his account and a couple of books by an author he loves before you wrap it, and show him how to make the text bigger on Christmas morning.

Skip it if he already owns a recent Kindle, or reads only paper books; a book and a good reading lamp would suit him better.

For the grandpa who loves music, the radio or the game

Sonos Era 100 Speaker, Black

Sonos

Era 100 Speaker, Black

Why they’ll love it. A compact speaker, about 7 inches tall, with two tweeters and a midwoofer for stereo sound that Sonos's Trueplay tunes to the room. It works with Amazon Alexa and Sonos Voice Control, so once it is set up he can ask for a station or a playlist without touching his phone. It suits a kitchen or a study, and visiting family can play music to it over Bluetooth.

Skip it if he won't use a smartphone app at all, or the home already runs on another speaker system.

For the gardener

Felco 2 Pruning Shears

Felco

2 Pruning Shears

Why they’ll love it. Swiss-made bypass pruners with forged aluminum handles and a hardened steel blade that cut branches up to about an inch. The blade, springs and shock absorbers are all replaceable, and Felco gives the handles a lifetime warranty, so it is a pair he can keep repairing instead of replacing. A practical gift, but one a serious gardener notices and appreciates.

Skip it if he is left-handed or has small hands (the Felco 2 is a right-handed, large-hand model), or he already owns a pair of Felcos.

For the grandpa who cooks

Brightland The Duo Olive Oil Set, Awake & Alive

Brightland

The Duo Olive Oil Set, Awake & Alive

Why they’ll love it. Two 375 mL bottles of California extra virgin olive oil from family farms in the Central Valley, cold-pressed within hours of harvest: Awake is bold and peppery, Alive smooth and grassy. For the grandfather who still makes Sunday dinner or a big weekend breakfast, it is an upgrade to something he cooks with every day, in bottles handsome enough to leave on the counter.

Skip it if he rarely cooks, or already buys good oil by the tin.

It fits most car cup holders and goes in the dishwasher. A small gift for the grandfather who walks the dog or drives to the diner every morning with a coffee in hand.

Skip it if he already has a travel mug he likes, or drinks from a big 20-ounce mug.

Gifts the grandkids can make him

Some of the best gifts cost nothing. The kids can make him something he will keep: a card with a drawing, a short letter from each one, a recorded video message for the photo frame, or a little book of his own stories they have written down. Older ones can interview him about his childhood on a phone and give him the recording as a gift, or cook him a meal from a family recipe. Pair any of these with one small bought gift and he will remember both.

Experience gifts for a grandfather who doesn't need anything

When Grandpa genuinely doesn't need anything, give him your time. Book a really nice meal at his favorite restaurant, a breakfast out with the whole family, tickets to a baseball game in the spring, a fishing trip, or a visit he wouldn't otherwise get. Put the date in a card so it is something to open on Christmas morning, and make sure someone is driving. A gift card works if it is for a place he already loves, such as his barber, the hardware store or the diner.

Personalized Christmas gifts for Grandpa

  • Fill it, don't just engrave it. The album and the frame are personal because of what goes inside them, not because of a name on the cover.
  • Write the card. A grandchild naming one thing Grandpa taught them is the part of the gift he is most likely to keep.
  • Order early. Monogrammed or engraved items often take longer to ship than standard ones; check the maker's timing before you count on it for Christmas.

How much should you spend on a gift for Grandpa?

There is no rule. Children still in school can give something they made or a small gift under $50; adult grandchildren and parents often pool money for one better gift, such as the frame or the speaker, rather than several small ones. Agree on a budget with the rest of the family first, so he doesn't end up with three of the same thing.

What we left out, and why

We left out slogan T-shirts, "Best Grandpa Ever" socks and other novelty gifts: fine from a small child, but not something we would recommend buying. We skipped tech that needs a monthly subscription, complicated gadgets with small buttons, and anything marketed to kids. We also left out another sweater or pair of slippers: he likely has favorites, and sizes are hard to guess. Grilling and coffee gear for a younger father is in our dad guide. Several picks here work for Grandma too, and for a grandmother there is more in our Gifts for Her edit.

Editor's note

Give him more of his family first. The frame or the filled album will matter most to most grandfathers; the throw, the Kindle and the speaker make his everyday routine more comfortable; the shears, the olive oil and the travel mug suit specific habits. Whatever you choose, set it up before you give it, and add a card from the grandkids. Most of these also make a good birthday gift or Father's Day gift later in the year. More ideas for men of every age are in our Gifts for Him edit.

Questions readers ask

What is a good Christmas gift for Grandpa?

Something that connects him with his family or improves his daily routine: a digital photo frame the grandchildren fill from their phones, a photo album of the year, a warm wool throw for his chair, a Kindle for reading, or a good olive oil for the grandfather who cooks. Add a handwritten card from the grandkids.

What do you get a grandpa who says he doesn't need anything?

Give time instead of things: a really nice meal out, a breakfast with the grandkids, a game, or a visit. If you want something to open, choose a consumable or a family gift, such as a puzzle you finish together over the holiday or a photo album you fill before Christmas.

What can grandchildren give Grandpa for Christmas?

Young grandchildren can make him something: a drawing, a letter, a video message for his photo frame, or a book of his stories they have written down. Older grandchildren can pool money for one good gift, or cook him a meal from a family recipe.

What are sentimental gifts for a grandfather?

A photo album filled with family pictures and captions, a digital frame preloaded with photos and videos, a recording of the grandchildren reading him a letter, or a book of his own stories. The sentiment comes from what you put in, so start a week or two before you need it.

What is a good inexpensive Christmas gift for Grandpa?

Under $50, a well-made travel mug for his coffee, a jigsaw puzzle to do together, a box of chocolates for a sweet tooth, or a handmade gift from the grandchildren. A small gift chosen for his habits means more than an expensive one chosen at random.
