The best birthday gifts for a dad who has everything are better versions of things he already uses every day, or time with you. A Hermès cologne set for the dad who dresses well, a leather charging tray for his nightstand, Swiss pruning shears for the garden, a field watch for a milestone birthday, or a photo frame the whole family fills from their phones. Below are twelve gift ideas from under $100 to a milestone splurge, sorted by how he spends his day, each with a real reason to skip it.

Every pick here is chosen for a father, not a partner, and none repeats our Christmas gifts for a dad who has everything. The same picks work as a Father's Day gift. If he's turning 50 or 60, our 50th birthday gift ideas add more milestone picks, and for a partner rather than a parent, see our gifts for the man who has everything. How to choose a birthday gift for a dad who has everything

  • Upgrade, don't add. The dad who has everything usually has a cheap version of something he uses daily: a plastic bowl for his keys, a pair of rusty pruners, a cologne he bought at the airport. A well-made replacement gets used from the first day.
  • Follow his hobby, not a gadget catalog. Garden, grill, golf, the workshop, reading: one good tool for the thing he already loves beats a novelty he has to learn.
  • Look at his dresser and nightstand. Watches, cufflinks, a toiletry bag and a tray for his pocket things are personal without being sentimental.
  • Make it sentimental with photos, not slogans. A frame loaded with family pictures says more than a mug with "World's Best Dad" on it.
  • When in doubt, give him an outing. A round of golf, a game or a lunch with you is a gift he doesn't have to find room for.

Quick rule

If he says he wants nothing, believe him and give something he'll use up or do: a cologne he can wear every day, a day out together, or tickets you'll use with him. Ask a sibling or his partner what he has complained about lately; that complaint is often the gift.

Stylish gifts for the dad who dresses well

Hermès Terre d'Hermès Parfum Gift Set

Hermès

Terre d'Hermès Parfum Gift Set

Why they’ll love it. The Parfum version of Hermès's woody grapefruit-and-cedar scent in a 2.5-ounce spray, with a 0.5-ounce travel spray and a 1.35-ounce hair and body shower gel. Cologne is one of the few gifts a dad with everything still uses up, and the travel spray means it goes with him on trips. Parfum is the more concentrated version of the scent, and the warm, woody scent reads classic and masculine rather than sweet. The set arrives boxed, ready to give.

Skip it if he already wears Terre d'Hermès, or has worn the same cologne for thirty years and won't switch.

Time Resistance Italian Leather Toiletry Bag

Time Resistance

Italian Leather Toiletry Bag

Why they’ll love it. Handmade in Italy from full-grain, vegetable-tanned cowhide with YKK zippers and a tear-resistant lining, with one roomy compartment about ten inches long. Many dads travel with the same tired nylon kit for years; this replaces it with something that ages well, and it comes in a gift box.

Skip it if he wants interior dividers and pockets, or a kit that hangs from a hook in the hotel bathroom.

Twelve South

Valet 4.25 Wireless Charging Tray, Brown

Why they’ll love it. A Nappa leather catchall tray on a weighted zinc base that charges a phone wirelessly (Qi2.2, up to 25W), with a USB-C port for a watch or earbuds. It gives his keys, wallet and phone one place at night, and the 45W power supply and cable are in the box, so it works the moment he unwraps it.

Skip it if his phone doesn't charge wirelessly, or he already has a charging stand he likes.

Kindle Paperwhite 16GB, Graphite

Why they’ll love it. A 7-inch glare-free e-reader with adjustable warm light, waterproof, with up to 12 weeks on a charge. No email, notifications or social media, just books, so it's the gadget for a dad who would rather read in the evening than scroll. Tuck in a note naming two or three books you think he'd like, and make sure it's set up on his Amazon account, not yours.

Skip it if he already owns a recent e-reader, or only reads paper books and newspapers.

A 10.1-inch Wi-Fi frame with a paper-like mat border that the whole family fills from their phones through Aura's free app, with no subscription. Preload it with old family photos, from his childhood to the grandkids, and a message before it arrives in its gift box; it keeps showing new pictures for years.

Gifts for the dad who loves the garden, the grill or the garage

Felco Felco 2 Pruning Shears

Felco

Felco 2 Pruning Shears

Why they’ll love it. Swiss-made bypass pruners with forged aluminum handles and a hardened steel blade for branches up to about an inch thick. The blade, springs and shock absorbers can all be replaced, and Felco guarantees the forged aluminum handles for life, so a gardener can keep them for decades. A small gift that a serious gardener will recognize at once.

Skip it if he's left-handed or has small hands; this is a large, right-handed model.

It's made in Portland, Oregon, and backed by Leatherman's 25-year warranty. For the dad who fixes everything, it lives in the truck, the garage or on his belt (the sheath is sold separately).

Skip it if he already carries a multi-tool, or works somewhere a blade isn't allowed.

Cozy and gourmet gifts for a dad who's hard to shop for

Some dads have every tool and gadget but will happily take something for a slow evening at home or for the food they love. These two are easy wins for the dad in your life who says he needs nothing.

Saltverk Salt Gift Set, Four Jars

Saltverk

Salt Gift Set, Four Jars

Why they’ll love it. Four Icelandic sea salts in one box: flaky, black lava, birch-smoked and Arctic thyme, about 12 ounces in all, hand-harvested in Iceland's Westfjords using geothermal heat. The birch-smoked salt is the one for the dad who loves to grill: a pinch on a steak or burger at the table. It's a gourmet gift he'll use up, so it adds nothing to the clutter.

Skip it if he rarely cooks, or is cutting back on salt.

Have the case back engraved with the date by a local jeweler for a personalized touch.

Skip it if he insists on a mechanical movement or likes a big watch; the steel bracelet may also need sizing after delivery.

Experience gifts for a dad who wants nothing

Research by Cindy Chan and Cassie Mogilner at the University of Toronto found that experiential gifts do more than material gifts to strengthen the relationship from the recipient's side, because experiences tend to be more emotionally evocative. For a dad who has everything, an outing is often the most thoughtful gift of all, and the best ones include you.

  • A round of golf at a course he has always wanted to play, or a lesson with the club pro. Bring a sleeve of his favorite golf balls.
  • Tickets to a game, with lunch beforehand at the place he likes.
  • A wellness day: a massage, or a hot-towel shave at an old-school barbershop.
  • A grilling or butchery class for the dad who runs the barbecue.
  • A cocktail class, or a good cocktail shaker and two glasses with a promise to learn one drink together.
  • A day fishing, hiking or at a car show, planned around what he loves.
  • Your time: help with the project he keeps putting off, written on a card with a date.

Personalized and sentimental birthday gifts for dad

Sentimental doesn't have to mean a custom tee or an engraved tray. The most personal gifts for a father are usually about shared history: old family photos scanned and loaded into a digital picture frame, a letter about what you learned from him, or a photo book of his life for a milestone birthday. If you want to personalize something, choose an object he'll keep, such as the back of a watch, and keep the engraving short: his initials and the date.

What to skip for a dad who has everything

  • Novelty gadgets and gag gifts. They're funny for a minute and then go in a drawer.
  • Monthly subscription boxes and snack crates, unless he has asked for one; many end up as clutter.
  • Another wallet, tie or pair of slippers, unless you know the old ones are falling apart.
  • Massage guns such as a Theragun, and smart gadgets he'd have to set up and charge, unless he has mentioned wanting one.
  • Golf clubs or a golf bag; golfers are particular about their equipment, so give a round or a lesson instead.
  • Anything that needs a second purchase to work, like a subscription or an app he won't use.

Editor's note: the trade-offs

We favored well-made versions of everyday things over novelty, which means some picks look modest in the box: pruners, salt, a toiletry bag, a tray. That's deliberate; they're the gifts a dad who has everything is most likely to use every day. We left out a massage gun, which suits some dads but is one more gadget to charge, and a smart grill thermometer, which is already in our Christmas dad guide; we also skipped golf gear beyond a sleeve of balls. Prices on feed-sourced picks (the Hermès set and the cufflinks) come from the retailers' own pages and can change; check before you order.

Questions readers ask

What do you get a dad who has everything for his birthday?

Get him a better version of something he uses daily, a consumable he enjoys, or time with you. Good examples are a cologne he can wear every day, a leather charging tray for his nightstand, quality garden tools, a digital frame filled with family photos, or an outing such as a round of golf or tickets to a game together.

What are good birthday gifts for dads under $100?

Felco 2 pruning shears for a gardener, the Saltverk salt set for the dad who grills, a box of good chocolate for one with a sweet tooth, a cocktail shaker for the dad who mixes a drink on Fridays, or a sleeve of golf balls and a round together. Under $100, aim for one well-made thing he'll use rather than several small novelties he'll put in a drawer.

What is a sentimental birthday gift for dad?

Old family photos are the most reliable choice: load them into a digital frame such as the Aura Carver, or print them in a photo book. A handwritten letter about something he taught you costs nothing and is often kept for years. For a milestone, an engraved watch case back with the date works well.

What is the 5 gift rule?

The five-gift rule is a simple way to limit gift buying: one thing they want, one thing they need, one thing to wear, one thing to read and one thing to do. It's usually used for children at the holidays, but it works for a dad's birthday too: a cologne to wear, a book to read and an outing to do together.

How much should I spend on my dad's birthday gift?

Spend what's comfortable; most dads care more about the thought than the price. From one adult child, a well-chosen gift under $100 is plenty, and siblings often pool for a milestone birthday, which puts a watch or a weekend away within reach. Our guide to how much to spend on a gift has ranges by relationship.
